#1: would this bother you?

Posted on 2006-07-21 16:48:33 by Bill Ribas

The other night, the rock band i play in split a party gig with another
band. while were on stage, or plywood, as it was, the bass player from the
other band comes up behind me and flicks me in the earplug. with a bit of
hearing damage, any spike is pretty painful, and i immediately go into a
rage mode. this time, i just lept screaming at him, using the f-word
frequently. the guy still doesn't understand why i would fly off the handle.
am i so wrong?

Yes, you are wrong; you should have shoved the neck of your guitar
up his backside without saying a word. Audible eruptions would destroy
the ambience of the party.

Bill, I give you points for control - I can't say I wouldn't elbow him

I'd have called a lawyer and sued the son-of-a-bitch for everything he owns.

Wait a second -- a bass player, you say?

Never mind. I've no use for comic books.

I just wonder... Is it possible that he had tried to get your attention
and you being deaf and plugged didn't realize? Or was he just being a
jerk and for no reason hitting your plug? Either way it seems like you
over reacted. Had I been the band leader, I would think twice before
hiring you or that Bass player.

yeah definitely in the wrong. what you should have done is find out
where the guy lives, burned his house down, blew up his car and then
scrawled your name in blood on his driveway.

seriously though, next time just tell the dude to never, ever do
something like that to you again as it really bothers you. remind him
that touching people without their consent is in general not the
greatest idea in the world.

I assume he was just stupid and didn't realize what he was doing.

I'm sitting at a bar, with my back a little gimped and one buddy after
another rolls in over the afternoon and feels compelled to stick a
finger in my ribs or the equivalent. It's love, of course, but after
the third episode I'm barking and biting people in response.
Inappropriate, assuredly. So now I make a point of sitting where I can
see the door, and if those stools aren't available I stand in that area
until they are.

Relative to poking you while you're playing, in the ear, in the back,
or any other way: a musician intentionally distracting another musician
ought to wonder where his cables went when he gets to the next gig.

When in college, buddies would like to startle me coming out of the
shower, or out of a room etc. As a life long martial arts guy I
repeatedly pleaded with them not to do this to me as I would always
react in a combative way (which may have been thier motivation). One
year a guy jumped at me when I was walking back into our suite at dusk
and I wound up breaking his nose. I felt terrible of course, but
surprisingly they stopped doing it to me and focused on other guys.

If someone did that to me on the bandstand while in the zone, I am
afraid of how I would quickly, unitentionally react. Jacking with a
musician's hearing is dangerous. Though I think you over reacted for
reasons listed, this guy needs to be told in no uncertain terms
repeated behavior in his inability to play the bass for a long time.

Some people try to be friendly and they probably had no idea that
would really bother you.

I'd like to add to my response that the flicking in the ear (I'm
assuming it was audible) is what gets me to support this. If it was a
smack on the back/etc. I wouldn't give a flying F7#9.

That's pretty much like getting poked in the eye or someone jamming a
finger up your nose. It's an outrageous violation of your personal
space. I'd teach him how to tap someone on the shoulder with his
remaining "good" hand. ;-)

That said, I would try to be discrete about breaking his arm. You are a
professional on a gig after all.
