#1: Durham, NC info?

Posted on 2006-07-20 15:25:32 by Michael L Kankiewicz

Hi everyone. I'll be spending next week in Durham visiting inlaws :|
Anyone know of any jazz happenings (esp guitar) in the area that I can
escape to? Clubs to check out, notable appearances, local players gigs,
etc? Day or night, I'll be there from Sun 8/23 through Fri 28. Also, any
music shops to recommend to tease my GAS or AAS?

Thanks,
MK

Duke University used to have a great jazz program 15 years ago or so.
Paul Jeffrey is still the director, so they probably still do.
Here's a schedule of events:

Other than the Duke campus, the city of Durham doesn't have much (or it
didn't when I lived there); as far as jazz clubs, you might have better
luck in Chapel Hill.

On an off-topic note, the West Campus (the gothic-styled one) is
pretty spectacular;
if you have never been there it is might be worth a visit.

I was there just last week. They have several jazz radio stations, and
they were announcing a lot of gigs. But where those joints were located
in the greater triangle region, I have no idea. There is a weekly paper
in the region. Perhaps they have an online version with listings.

That's exactly where I was working, in those old tombs. The chapel is
especially nice. The only problem is that some brain surgeon decided
that Duke does not require any signage anywhere. Apparently everyone
already knows where everything is. Prepare to be lost.

I live in Durham but unfortunately I'm going to be out of town most of
next week. I will be back though in time for a quartet gig on Thurs
the 27th in Raleigh at a place called Amra's. (about 20-30 min drive
from Durham) Feel free to email me for more info. While you're here
there is a GREAT 24/7 jazz radio station at 90.7fm. There is a fair
amount of jazz happening in the RDU area but it's not always easy to
find out about just from browsing the weekly listings. You can call
me if you want (my # is on my website, I hesitate to post it here) and
I can suggest some stuff. Not really any jazz guitar shops however.
