#1: Which Taylor Guitar do you prefer????

What is your guys take on the Taylor acoustics versus their classicals?

If you were to buy one, what would you buy, the acoustic or classical?

Well, they certainly have more of a rep for their steel-strings... but boy,
I played one of their classicals a while back (last spring) and I haven't
been able to get it out of my mind since. That was one nice guitar!

IIRC their nylon strings are not true classicals, at least as far as
nut width. They were solidly panned over at rmcg. How much this had to
do with the (relatively) narrow fingerboard I do not know.
You will get a lot of contrasting opinions if you post this over at
rmmga. Part of it may be that Bob Taylor is a somewhat controversial
figure in the industry--as far as I can tell mostly for things unrelated
to the quality of his guitars.
I can say that I own a Taylor Big Baby, and it's wonderful--the best
$300. guitar I've ever owned.

I tried their nylons when they first came out and was disappointed. If
you're used to the sound of a real one (that has some depth and projection),
they're just not the same animal. I think they've made some mods to them
though, so I should look again. To me, the originals had a small, weak
sound, but they played very nicely. I like the narrower neck width.

I've owned several Taylor guitars over the years - mostly steel
string models. I did purchase one of the original Taylor nylons. It
was a small bodied NS32CE - essentially a grand concert body with the
depth of a grand auditorium. It was a very quiet guitar; no where near
the volume of a traditional classical guitar. Other departures from
the traditional norm were the narrower neck (1-7/8" nut), a fret
board with radius similar to a steel string, piezo pickup w/built in
preamp/mixer and Venetian cutaway. I believe Taylor wanted to make a
nylon string guitar that felt more comfortable for the steel string
player in terms of setup and playability.

"Unplugged" it sounded for quiet, but balanced. Amplified, it
sounded very, very nice. I used to play it either through a Mackie
PA/Mixer or through a SWR Strawberry Blonded. I thought it sounded
nicer than my friend's Takamine EC132 (or something like that) guitar
through the PA system.

Since then, Taylor has designed a larger bodied option. It is
essentially Taylor's grand auditorium body. I tried this larger
bodied guitar at my local shop. It is definitely a nicer sounding
guitar than the original model and it retains the steel string styled
neck.

As much as I like Taylor steel string guitars, I think there are much
better nylon string guitars available on the market.

By the way, to address the other part your question, I really like
Taylor's steel string grand concerts. Small bodied guitars with a very
bright, clear sound. I have 2 of their grand concerts. Both with
rosewood back and sides, single Venetian cutaway and 1-3/4" nut widths.
One has an Engelmann spruce top and the other has a sitka spruce top.
I prefer the Engelmann.

Great answers here but you might also want to check feedback on the
acoustic and classical guitar newsgroups.

I own the 714CE, (acoustic) which has a spruce top and is very lively. Best
sounding and playing acoustic I've had in my hands. I had been trying out
Martins, Gibsons, Guilds, for some time before I found this one. It was one
of those "love at first playing" things...walked out that day with a new
$2,000 guitar. Boy was my wife mad. I've also played the classicals which
are very nice. The one's I tried are very easy to play, and are very
responsive, great tone. My band plays is rock/pop, so I need the acoustic.
So you'll be happy with either, but I'd make my decision based on what style
of music you play most.

PT,

I have played about 4 different T 5 Taylors. Very light, and as you
would guess with a Taylor, very playable. With the various pickups and
settings on it, I have had trouble dialing in on the sound I am looking
for, however all the sounds I came up with seemed very usable. Too
many options? Very revolutionary guitar and design. I am not sure
though that I would buy one.
