#1: Sheryl Bailey interview and more at JGL.

Posted on 2005-01-16 22:30:33 by Lyle Robinson

Hey all. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and that 2005 is
looking to be the best year yet. I have updated JGL with a new interview
from Shirley Bailey...a very talented guitarist and composer. There are
also three new CD reviews and a new section called "Players Corner" with a
contribution from your very own Tim Berens...:) Check it out and let me
know what y'all think. And if you have anythign to share on JGL please do
not hesitate to let me know and we'll get it up on the site. Take care and
all the best.

Hi, That's Sheryl Bailey... Also on the interview page, it's spelled
Cheryl Bailey.

Looks great though...

Hey Lyle. You should design your site with CSS. Cascading Style Sheets. It'll
make life a whole lot easier for you in the long run.

Not being smart, just offering a tip.

DOH! Thanks Ken I don't know why I didn't catch that on my 50th proof-
reading attempt. Sheesh...I need more coffee. Thanks again Ken.

Hey John...and thanks for the tip. I was actually thinking the same thing
yesterday as I was making the updates...I will have to familiarize myself
with CSS...but you are right. Thanks again.

She's a GREAT player. Great feel and note choices, very hip. I'm
surprised folks don't talk about here very often here.

I agree, I saw her do a couple of shows at the World Guitar Congress
last Spring and she was just great. She plays a type of jazz that I
really like and her band was really in a groove.

you're right, she is awesome. I started hearing her a bunch recently
on the radio and bought two of her records off iTunes. She has a
similar "every note counts" approach to Peter Bernstein. Very hip,
melodic ideas and performed with a balance of drive and comfort. I'm
assuming she wrote a bunch of the tunes on her records (one downside
to iTunes is no liner notes or credits) There are some really nice
tunes in any case. Didn't she come in 3rd at the Monk competition
behind Van Ruller and Paul Peiper?

I like her comment that "A good jazz solo can stand on it's own,
without chordal accompaniment." I also like her 2 hour continuous
workout through changes and different keys at different tempos that she
uses to stay in shape.
