My understanding is that there will soon be a USB connection rather than a
13 pin connection for midi on Brian Moore guitars. What will be the
utility? My assumption is that I will not need a interphase GR20/33 and once
midi goes directly into the computer, I will be able to use mid driven
software.

Nope, unfortunately you will still need pitch to midi conversion. The USB is
just a different carrier for the digital signal which used to be in 13 pin
format.
