I just rented this from netflix and it's terrific. Huge insight into
the Benson way of thinking, his technique, philosophies, etc.
It's not really a traditional instructional tape in that it seems to be
pretty much a stream of consciousness type of recording but it's
definitely worth the price of admission. I suspect this DVD is one
reason we haven't heard much from Bornman the last couple months!
It's really a must-have in my opinion. If not for the instructional
aspects, for the close-up view of one of the most influencial jazz
guitarists in history.

It's the same with the John McLaughlin DVD's. People complained about
this or that perceived deficiency, but they are an insight and a chance
to see close up a titan of the guitar. Just the couple of clips I saw
from the Benson one would make it worth the price. I intend to buy it.

Agree 100%. I own a number of videos both performance and
instructional and this is one I;ve enjoyed watching several times. As
you say, its not a tradiional instruction video but its one of the
very small number where I've lifted ideas from and for that matter
whole tunes e.g. his version of Tenderly. Great stuff and I wish he
would do another in a similar vein. Now I'll admit to being a big GB
fan but IMHO You can't get a better lesson/musical expereince for
$20.00 rob

Yeah. What's neat is listening to George talk about how he develops
ideas. That's what I want to know, not the modes of the chromatic
minor.

A friend of mine - luthier and very accomplished local guitarist
said about that DVD was : "awesome to watch and gloriously
USELESS as instructional video". I agree with that. Still - it was
inspiring but maybe not as as inspiring as watching Sinti or
listening to Charlie Christian.

I just bought that dvd and I thought it was a let down. I am a fan of
Benson but in the video he never seemed to play anything in time. He
was playing things as fast as he could but he was never keeping the
groove (he would never keep it going). I would have rather heard him
play more simple yet in time as if he were playing with a band or a
metronome. (It was also strange how he kept playing the classical
guitar and when he messed up he said it wasn't his guitar) I think he
was showing off a bit and if he wouldn't have tried so hard it would
have been a better video. I love George Benson and I purchased most of
his cd's (love Cookbook) but the video could have been better. For
instructional dvds I think Jimmy Bruno's is one of the best.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. There was nothing wrong with his
time on that DVD. I know that Benson took a "stretch" to make the DVD in the
first place. He doesn't believe in lessons and instructional materials. He
believes it cheapens the art. He feels that players should learn from the
original recordings like he did. I'm not saying I agree with him but I
respect him. He is one of the most terrific jazz guitarists in history and
this DVD only serves to demonstrate that up close and personal. He wanted to
make a stream of consciousness video giving you an up-close view of his
approach and I think he succeeded tremendously. The material is not
necessarily right for a beginning jazz guitarist but if you are a University
level player, I think you will get a lot out of this.
I happened to enjoy what he did on the nylon string guitar. I don't care
about the mistakes. It just shows he's human. I don't get the criticism,
frankly...

At first I was somewhat put off by the video. However, I was drawn to
watch it numerous times and really enjoy it. My take on it is GB is a
no BS genuinely nice guy and I would love to have just the talent in is
pinky finger. He is so much more than a guitar player - not that being
guitar player is a bad thing. The way I see the video is if you
knocked on GB's door and asked him what his take on playing was and he
said come on in and I'll show you - the video is what you'd get.

I saw this DVD yesterday and although I didn't learn how to play, I
learned how to learn. This is something I could watch over and over,
not to analyze but to listen to and let soak in. It's very much in the
Jazz tradition of learning from others and not from books. I thought
that GB had great chops, now I realize that he has great ears.
