I've just been informed that my gig tonight is supposed to be Latin Jazz. I
think that they are coming more from a Salsa, Mambo world than Jobim et al.
Since this is a guitar trio gig the weight is on me. Any suggestions as to
what I should play will be appreciated.

Do you know "Stone Flower" by Jobim? Santana covered it long ago.

Ok guys, thanks. I've got a list of 25 now and I'm sure that I'll think of
more that can be "Latinified" when I get there. I have to start getting
ready (traffic is bad here this time of day). I might check here more time
if you happen to think of some more. Thanks again,

I got there (a coffehouse) and it was nothing like anything that I expected.
The last time that I played with these guys we played straight ahead
standards. The best way that I can describe it would be a mixture of acid
jazz with avant garde and world music sensibilties. The drummer, who was the
leader had things like Sengalese string instruments recorded onto a looper
and we (guitar, bass and drums) played along with it at times. We backed
singers and poets also. The drummer would loop parts of the poets rap and
then they would continue reciting over it. Later parts of the poem that were
on the looper were played during our solos. There was also an element of
hip-hop to all of this. When they called they said jazz mambo and salsa so
that is where all of the confusion came in. They are both great players ,
some of you might remember Ramon the bass player from the video I sent you
to once. Thanks to all of you guys for the suggestions I can still use them
for more Latin oriented gigs. (You never know what it will be when you take
calls these days:)

FYI, "Tco Tico" is a Brazilian tune and technically in the style of
"choro". One of the great universally known examples. Thought done in
every conceivable style at one time or other (it seems to have gotten a
rep as a Laurence Welk-ian accordian show-off thang), it's neither
"latin" nor "jazz" per se.

Hey Charlie- So how did you like playing with a "looper"
What equipment did the guy use?
Did it work well? Sometimes those things can be off.
Sounds like an interesting gig.

He was using a Digitech which was set up next to his drum set at arm's
level. There were prerecorded
sounds and the mike was also running through it. It was controlled it by
hand. Everything went extremely well as far as his blending things in and
out of the music. This was the most unusual gig that I've played all year.
