Jim Hall is... [message #222375] Do, 07 April 2005 23:29

....really, really, really good.

Yeah, I know. Duh. But man, I am cleaning up my
basement, and I found a big-ass box with my old
beatup 1962 elementary shool model turntable with
self-contained speaker, and am diving into all my
old vinyl. As I type, Jim and Art Farmer are
playing "Indian Summer" on Concierto. What a
beautiful musician Jim Hall is.

After this, I'm checking out a duo with Ron Carter
called "Telephone". Vinyl is cool...

Vinyl is cool, but so are DVDs. Check out the
Jim Hall film bio "A Life In Progress" - I saw it for
the first time last week, a beautiful film about a
a beautiful artist.

I saw him in NJ at the Clifton Tap Room when he first started playing around
NY as a featured guest. When he got out of the cab with his amp which was
small even for those times I remember thinking that no one would hear him.
He proved me wrong. He stated the head to "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" on a
175 with the volume turned completely off. You could hear a pin drop.

One of those "Jazz Casual" videos features the Farmer quartet with Jim Hall.
Nice stuff on there.

Doug - I'm a bit confused here. The only Jim Hall "Concierto" album
I'm familiar with is the circa 74 CTI release with Desmond and Baker,
which I've owned on vinyl and cd, one of my faves. It doesn't have Art
Farmer or the track "Indian Summer."

A quick look at All Music reveals this title with Farmer on a 2004
compilation "Commitment." What exactly is the title of the vinyl lp in
question and is it under Hall's name or Farmer's?

Not meaning to split hairs, just curious. When it comes to thoughtful
ballad playing, or off-center bop interpretations without the 180 notes
per second syndrome, Hall is tops.

You're right; they did "Indian Summer" on "Commitment", not "Concierto".
Chet Baker is the trumpeter on "Concierto".

Oh yeah, and to answer the rest of your question, "Commitment" was a Jim
Hall LP which was released back in the late '70s on Horizon Records, the
same label which originally put out "Jim Hall Live".

Those are both great records. Jim Hall was so ahead of his time it ain't
even funny. The father of modern jazz guitar, IMO.
