Upgrades for ES-165 [message #114015] Fri, 10 December 2004 01:23

Hey, guys. This is my first post to the group and I'm excited to be a
part of it.

I own, in addition to my Buscarino, a Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis model
(the original design), year 1993. The headstock cracked pretty
seriously near the nut a few months ago, but the neck seems fine so
I'll get it repaired and set up by Ed Roman. I was wondering if you
guys had any ideas about upgrades for the guitar. I'm considering
buying a used '57 classic from eBay, but if there are some other
practical and useful hardware upgrades that you know of, let me know.
Thanks!

Hmmm . . .

Most of the Ed Roman reports I've heard around here haven't been very good.

If you're in NYC you need to bring that guitar to Norio Imai on 22nd
St, not Ed Roman of all people! Norio was a top setup/repair guy at
Sadowsky's shop for over 11 years, and he'll fix that guitar for you.
He does fantastic work. He's at 212-675-8404. You can tell him Jim
White told you to call him if you want.

Seriously, do not go the Ed Roman route.

As for making changes to the pickups, I'd go with a Duncan Antiquity or
Fralin PAF myself. But the most important thing is not sending your
guitar to Ed Roman, in case I wasn't clear about that ;-)

I have an es165. As far as I'm concerned, that guitar is a one trick
pony. It has one basic sound and that's it.

Nothin wrong with that.

No, not at all. I like it for the basic, clean jazz sound. I'm not
sure what sort of upgrades would change or improve upon that. It's a
very mid-rangey guitar, so maybe a hotter pickup would give it a
little more push and definition.

I have found that the amp plays a vital role in defining the elec tone.
Since there is a big difference in amplifer/speaker responses you might want
to look into that area if you haven't yet.

My son has a 165 and the pickup is fine. I'm not sure what you'd gain by
going to a 57 classic. I suspect the differences would be pretty subtle.

Hey Jack,

Is Jeremy still digging the 165? I'd love to hear some clips.
